Common Water Filters
The most common
drinking water filters remove a standard level of impurities from the
water.
There are two main types of water
filters. Salt water filters are the ones you see advertised on late
night TV. They are cheap but have to be changed often. While they
effectively remove impurities, they add salt to your water. The added
salt is not good for people with high blood pressure and it will corrode
your plumbing over time. While they do soften and purify your water,
they also filter out healthful minerals in the water such as calcium
that you need in your diet.
The other type of water filter is the carbon filter. It removes
chlorine, pesticides, and other contaminants while leaving in the
healthful mineral nutrients you need. The charcoal used in these water
filters comes from coconut husks. The carbon filter is easy to install
and filters out the most harmful contaminants and bacteria. It doesn’t
add anything to the water. A charcoal filter generally lasts six to nine
months. Although more expensive than a salt water filter, it may be more
economical in the long run.
The most common drinking water filters remove a standard level of
impurities from the water. Some filters exceed the standard level and
remove many more impurities. Filters with high filtering capabilities
are more expensive than ordinary filters. Multi-Pure, for example, makes
high-quality drinking water filters that remove impurities such as lead,
mercury, asbestos, cysts, VOCs, MTBE, PCBs, Giardia, Cryptosporidium,
chloramines, and other contaminants. This high level of filtration comes
with a high price tag compared to other filters on the market.
