What are TDS Meters?

TDS stands for “total dissolved solids.”

TDS stands for “total dissolved solids.” Most filters remove solid contaminants, but many pollutants dissolve in water and bond to its molecular structure. For example, stir a teaspoon of salt into a glass of water and watch it disappear! A TDS meter is like a watchdog or canary in the coalmine, making sure your reverse osmosis system is working well and that you and your family are drinking pure water.

Reverse osmosis is a water filtering system designed to rid your water of dissolved solids. By applying mechanical pressure, the polluted water is separated from the clean water by a filter. A TDS meter tests your treated water to let you know how how effectively your reverse osmosis system is working. It determines the percentage of solids that has been removed. When the TDS meter shows that your system is eliminating less than 80 percent of the dissolved solids, it’s time to get a new filter.

Many reverse osmosis systems come with a TDS meter built in that allows you to check TDS levels every time you drink a glass of water. If your system doesn’t have a built-in TDS meter, you can buy an external TDS meter to test your water periodically.
