Installing a Water
Filtering System Under the Sink
You can install your
own under-the-counter water filter. You'll need a filter and a T-joint
for the connection (one might come with the filter) and a medium-size
Phillips screwdriver, pliers, and a medium-size adjustable wrench.
Be sure there is room for the filter to
fit under your sink. If not, you will need to buy a unit that fits above
the sink. The filter should have a flexible tube to connect with the
cold water line and a T-joint to connect the cold water cut-off valve to
the sink’s water supply tube. If no T-joint comes with the filter, your
supplier can advise you about the right size to buy.
Decide where you will place the filter. Some filters are designed to
stand on the floor under the sink. Others are designed to hang on a side
or back wall under the sink. Clear the area you choose and be sure the
filter fits. If you decide to hang the unit, follow the manufacturer's
instructions. A template, along with the bracket and screws, should be
available to show placement.
Locate the filter faucet, which should be included with the unit. Read
the manufacturer's instructions on proper placement. Many sinks have an
opening for installing a water filter or a spray unit. If your sink does
not have this opening, you must cut one in your countertop behind or
close to the sink. Cut the hole yourself only if you have the tools and
experience to do the job well; if you don’t, have a qualified person do
it.
Once you have a proper opening for the filter faucet, you are ready to
install it. Place the faucet in the hole and tighten it up underneath
according to the manufacturer's instructions. Tighten it enough for it
to be steady, but do not over tighten it, especially if the sink is
ceramic or made of fragile material. Connect the filter faucet, which
should come with all the necessary parts.
Next, turn off the cold water supply. There is usually a cut-off valve
under the sink. When you are sure it is off, disconnect the cold water
supply hose by turning it counterclockwise with your medium-size
adjustable wrench or pliers.
Connect the T-joint to the water supply cut-off valve, ensuring that the
side connection points in a direction you can access to connect the
filter hose. After you reconnect the cold water sink hose to the other
end of the T-joint, you're ready to connect the filter supply hose to
the side connection of the T-joint.
Test the connections by slowly turning on the cold water at the cut-off
valve. Tighten all joints securely and test all connections for leaks.
If there are leaks, turn the water off again, tighten the joints that
are leaking, and turn the water on again. If you continue to have leaks,
disconnect everything and then reconnect everything and test again.
While the filter fills up, watch the connections for leaks. When you can
detect no leaks, you have successfully installed your water filter.
